A special event during Malta Festival Poznań 2015 will be the premiere of The Magic Mountain, an opera based on the novel by Thomas Mann. The author of the music, Paweł Mykietyn, is one of the most renowned Polish composers who regularly works with Krzysztof Warlikowski, and who has also created a number of film scores, for example to films directed by Małgorzata Szumowska and Andrzej Wajda. The performance will be directed by Andrzej Chyra, a theatre and film actor, and the director of the acclaimed The Gamblers by Dmitri Shostakovich at Opera Bałtycka. The stage set designer is Mirosław Bałka, a visual artist whose works can be found among some major international collections, for instance at the Tate Modern in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The libretto was written by Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk who is considered one of the most original voices in Polish dramaturgy. “We interpret Mann’s novel in the context of World War I, in other words, of the idiotic enthusiasm for war which lead to the death of millions of people. But The Magic Mountain is, in fact, a tale about the condition of our minds and our civilisation; a tale that continues to be very topical,” says director Andrzej Chyra.

The performance is a co-production of Malta Festival Poznań, Opera Bałtycka w Gdańsku and Program II Polskiego Radia.
